A cartoon? I know, your thinking why does this belong on a hair blog. Well when I first found out that Disney made a black princess, I went to look for it immediately. I was very curious on what the princess looked like and especially curious on how they were going to do her hair. I like straight hair, I wear straight hair. But I am much happier to know that they gave her a natural curl rather than straight hair.

 
The film will be about an American fairy tale, Broadway-style musical set in the French Quarter of New Orleans. A prince named Naveen from the land of Maldonia is transformed into a frog by the evil scheming voodoo magician Dr. Remy Voodoo. The frog prince asks a princess named Tiana to break the spell by kissing him. However, the kiss doesn’t break the spell, but instead turns Tiana into a frog as well. Together, the two of them must reach the good voodoo priestess of the Bayou, Mama Odie, while befriending a trumpet-playing alligator and a hopelessly romantic firefly along the way. The film is set to be released on December 11, 2009. Check out the trailer below.

My girlfriend Kim called me raving about a leave-in hair conditioner that I just got to try. It is Mixed Chicks Leave-in Conditioner/Styling cream (10 oz. $16.99.) I have heard it before in years past, but haven’t used it. She kept telling me how much she loved the way it really defined her curls. So after hearing her testimony, I hopped on their website and found the closest salon in my area that sales the product. I have to warn you, the salon may be a little pricey. I would also suggest you get a few samples. The salon does carry them and if you like it, make sure to buy it online because I paid $22.00 for mine and that is a lot of money!

On May 12th, Tyra Banks brought to the light a serious topic  about hair in the African American Community.  She posed the question, Do you have that “good hair?”  And what is good hair?  As many of you have heard, good hair is hair that is not kinky, coarse or short.  This is a topic that I am glad is being brought to the fore front because this topic of good hair vs. bad hair effects African American women self- esteem and health.  If you haven’t seen the preview, click on the link below.

 What Is Good Hair?

Beyonce’s new movie Obsessed plays in movie theaters today. It’s about a successful asset manager played by Idris Elba, who has just received a huge promotion and is blissfully happy in his career and in his wife, played by Beyonce Knowles. But a temp worker starts stalking him and the wife ain’t having it.

Now I love most of the wigs Beyonce wears but frankly the one she wears in this movie is ugly. I dislike the color and the wig is just too big and too much hair. Instead I like the one she wore to the movie premiere. She looks very pretty.

Celebrities can be trend setters when it comes to the latest hairstyles.  When I see a hairstyle I like on a celebrity I admire, I look at their hairstyles closely and try to emulate it.  I also keep in mind that wearing the latest hairstyles I see on celebrities may not work on my face.  When trying to wear the right haircut or hairstyle it is important to know your face shape, and to choose a hairstyle that is appropriate for what you want to do in life.

For the next couple of weeks I will be talking about the best hairstyles for long, square, oval, round, and heart shaped faces.  This week I will focus on round shaped faces.  Round faces can style their hair in soft long layers and do best without full bangs. Round faces look better to avoid styling hair so that it is full at the sides of the face; rather keep hair sleek and smooth over that area.   Curls are a great option for this face shape.  Curly hair styles can be quick and easy to style. I have provided pictures below to show you what I mean. 

Rihanna’s long layered, curly hair, works easily on round shaped faces.

You can also try Halle Berry’s, short curly wedge shaped hair style. 

If you have long hair you can do ponies, half up do’s, twists, buns, scarves, or braids. The options are almost endless!
